A privately owned Georgian country house on the Montgomeryshire–Shropshire border, Garthmyl Hall is an exclusive-use wedding venue in the Welsh countryside designed for immersive, multi-day celebrations. With historic gardens, a grand Ballroom, a botanical Summer House and a new Georgian Orangery on the horizon, it offers space, privacy and flexibility for couples who want to gather their favourite people for a full weekend rather than a single day.

Dating back to 1859, Garthmyl Hall blends period architecture with a layered, design-led aesthetic that feels both classic and current. Set within five acres of landscaped grounds, the estate sits just outside Montgomery in Powys, where Wales meets Shropshire. Cedar trees, expansive lawns and a restored Walled Garden frame the house, creating a setting that shifts beautifully with the seasons.

The Hall is offered on a fully exclusive basis, giving couples and their guests complete use of the house and grounds for two days and two nights. Arrival is from 2pm the day before, with departure at 12pm the day after, encouraging a relaxed, extended celebration rather than a compressed 24-hour event. Maximum event capacity is 170 guests, with on-site accommodation for up to 49 across the Hall, Stables and Boathouse.

Inside, spaces unfold from the blush, sage and gold Ballroom to the Gentleman’s Bar, Living Room and private Cellar Bar. The Summer House – a reclaimed glasshouse structure threaded with grapevines – adds a contemporary, botanical layer to the estate. From intimate soirées to larger traditional weddings, the venue adapts easily to different scales and styles.

Looking ahead, Garthmyl Hall is preparing to unveil a permanent Georgian Orangery, replacing the current marquee. Designed with a large glass ceiling lantern, whitewashed walls, underfloor heating, sound insulation and creative lighting, the Orangery will seat up to 170 guests and blend French château influences with Georgian architecture. This addition will further elevate the flow of indoor-outdoor celebrations from May 2027 onwards.

Garthmyl Hall is licensed for civil ceremonies and also welcomes humanist celebrations on site, allowing couples to keep the entire day in one location. Same-sex marriages are proudly celebrated here.

Ceremonies can unfold in several distinct settings:

  • The Walled Garden – With capacity for over 150 guests, this restored garden combines structured pathways with abundant seasonal planting. Vows take place beneath open skies, framed by brick walls and greenery.
  • The Ballroom – Seating up to 100 guests for a ceremony, the Ballroom’s soft colour palette, chandelier lighting and French doors offer a refined indoor alternative.
  • The Summer House – Accommodating around 45 guests, this light-filled glasshouse space suits smaller gatherings with a relaxed, botanical atmosphere.

For those planning a religious service, churches in nearby Berriew and Montgomery can be incorporated into the schedule. Throughout the planning process, the in-house team provides wedding and supplier guidance, with full coordination on the day itself.

A wedding at Garthmyl Hall is designed to unfold in chapters. The drinks reception might begin in the Walled Garden, on the lawns or within the Summer House, with guests moving easily between indoor and outdoor spaces depending on the season.

Dinner can be hosted in the Ballroom, al fresco in the gardens, or in the forthcoming Orangery, which will accommodate up to 170 guests for a seated wedding breakfast. Long tables beneath a glass lantern ceiling, candlelight against whitewashed walls and greenery overhead will define the new space.

As evening falls, celebrations shift towards the main party space. Live bands or DJs take over, with a dedicated dance floor available, while three separate bar areas – the Gentleman’s Bar, Summer House Bar and Cellar Bar – keep the atmosphere moving across different moods and corners of the estate. Although there is no option for fireworks and a curfew applies, the layout allows for a natural progression from dinner to dancing to late-night cocktails.

The multi-day format is central to the experience: welcome cocktails or a BBQ the night before, the main celebration, and a post-wedding brunch or garden gathering the following day are all possible, making full use of the estate’s exclusivity.

On-site accommodation is a significant part of the experience. The Hall itself features ten en-suite bedrooms sleeping up to 23 guests, each styled with layered interiors, luxury Molton Brown toiletries, locally made chocolates and fresh seasonal flowers.

Beyond the main house, the Old Dairy (sleeping 10), the Clocktower (sleeping 8), and additional cottages including Ty Bach One, Ty Bach Two and the Wainhouse (sleeping two each) provide further flexibility. The Boathouse offers an additional private retreat.

In total, up to 50 guests can stay on site for 2-3 nights. The Honeymoon Suite occupies its own private wing, complete with super king-size bed, dressing room and a spacious en-suite bathroom with slipper bath, offering a secluded space to prepare and unwind.

Garthmyl Hall works with a curated list of high-end catering partners – including Comyn Bruce, Tallulah & Co, Paisley Flour and Wild Garlic – allowing couples to select a team that aligns with their tastes and style. Menus are typically seasonal and locally sourced, ranging from multi-course fine dining to relaxed BBQs or garden feasts, with prices starting from £75 per head.

The venue is licensed with a fully operational bar and offers bespoke drinks packages, personalised cocktails and a curated wine list. Couples may also bring their own table wine for the wedding breakfast, subject to a corkage fee. With three distinct bar areas across the estate, drinks service becomes part of the spatial experience rather than confined to a single room.
