A New York Wedding Weekend Under the Algarve Sun

Photographed by Matt + Lena Photography

For Bri and Jesse, Casa Monte Cristo in Lagos did not read as a backdrop so much as a place everyone could settle into. Matt + Lena Photography described it as “a full weekend celebration, bringing together guests from across the United States for an immersive European escape,” and that idea sits at the centre of the wedding. This was not a destination wedding built around spectacle. It felt closer to a summer house party in the Algarve, stretched across terraces, lawns, poolside afternoons and late evening dancing. For couples planning a wedding in Portugal, it shows how powerful a venue can be when the guests are not just attending a day, but entering a shared rhythm.

That rhythm came through most clearly in the people. The bridal party had a looseness that made the wedding feel alive: blue suits, pale green gowns, floral dresses, bare shoulders, champagne glasses raised into the sun. The mismatched bridesmaid looks were described by the photographers as “soft shades of green and blue,” a palette that felt natural against the palms, white walls and stone. Nothing looked overly matched or too controlled. The group portraits had movement in them, with people walking, leaning in, laughing, looking at each other rather than only at the camera.

Casa Monte Cristo Collection gave the celebration a strong sense of place without demanding too much formality from it. The ceremony terrace looked out towards Lagos, with the ocean in the distance and the town below, while the gardens held the quieter portraits and the lawn became the centre of the reception. The photographers called the ceremony setting “both expansive and intimate,” which feels right: open to the Algarve landscape, but still gathered closely around the couple. As a wedding venue in Lagos, Casa Monte Cristo Collection seems to work especially well for celebrations that want space, privacy and a house-party feeling rather than a single formal setting.

The food and drink carried that same holiday mood. A welcome BBQ, pizza truck and ice cream cart set the tone early, while the wedding day moved into cocktails, blue glassware, long tables and a dinner that the photographers described as “intentionally unhurried.” Even the details with stronger styling — wax-sealed menus, ivory roses, gold cutlery, tall candles — never pulled the wedding away from its relaxed setting. They sat comfortably within it. The pastel de nata tower did the same, bringing in a local reference without turning it into a theme.

There are also images that shift the pace. The veil portraits in the garden feel private and slightly playful. The first dance has a darker, more charged energy beneath the tent, with guests gathered close around the couple. Later, Bri and Jesse walked through the grounds – drinks in hand, the moon above them and the reception glowing behind the greenery. These are the frames that make the wedding feel less like a destination chosen for views alone, and more like a place where people actually spent time together.

For couples searching through wedding venues in Portugal, this wedding is a useful reminder that guest experience can be the point of view. The Algarve brought the light, coastline and warmth, but the stronger feeling came from how everyone seemed to inhabit the weekend. As Matt + Lena Photography put it, the celebration was “unmistakably rooted in its destination.” Not because every detail announced Portugal, but because the whole wedding seemed to move at the pace of a long summer evening.
