His Majesty’s Theatre
His Majesty’s Theatre carries the presence of a working Edwardian playhouse rather than a preserved relic. Completed in 1904 on Hay Street in central Perth, it was the city’s first reinforced concrete building, faced in red brick and pale limestone in the Edwardian Baroque style. Inside, a horseshoe-shaped auditorium rises through three original tiers toward a domed ceiling worked in gold and silver scrollwork, a grand marble staircase carrying the same period detail into the foyers.
What gives the theatre its character is that it’s still used almost exactly as built. Believed to be the only remaining working Edwardian theatre in Australia, it stages West Australian Ballet and West Australian Opera rather than sitting roped off behind glass. As a wedding venue in Perth, His Majesty’s Theatre feels theatrical, ornate and unmistakably historic, with a sense of occasion most modern function spaces can’t manufacture.
