Hotham Hall Estate is an exclusive-use country house wedding venue in East Yorkshire, set within more than 120 acres of parkland, gardens, woodland and arable land. Built in 1720 and recently restored, the Georgian house combines historic architecture with a more contemporary approach to hospitality, giving couples a private estate setting that feels both established and carefully renewed. Its strength lies in the contrast between scale and intimacy. The wider estate creates privacy and a strong sense of arrival, while the house itself offers a sequence of characterful rooms, from the oak-panelled Oak Room to the Library and 18th-century Ballroom. Weddings here can unfold across interiors, terraces and gardens, with space for both hosting and staying.

Ceremonies

Ceremonies at Hotham Hall are shaped by the choice between historic rooms and the estate’s wider landscape. The venue is licensed for legally recognised marriages, including same-sex ceremonies, and also offers the option for religious ceremonies on site.

Indoor Rooms

Inside the Georgian house, ceremonies are framed by period details, fireplaces and architectural features, creating a more traditional atmosphere without feeling overly formal.

Gardens & Grounds

Outdoor ceremonies make use of the estate’s lawns, gardens and seasonal planting, with the surrounding parkland giving the moment a sense of privacy and scale.

Woodland Settings

For couples drawn to a quieter, more natural setting, the woodland areas offer a softer atmosphere, surrounded by trees and the wider grounds.

The in-house team supports couples throughout planning, helping shape the flow of the day and ensuring each ceremony setting is prepared in line with the wider celebration.

Receptions

Receptions at Hotham Hall are defined by the relationship between house and landscape. The day can move easily between formal interiors, terraces and open grounds, giving couples a celebration that feels structured without being confined to a single room.

The Entrance Hall often works as a first gathering point for welcome drinks, with a natural flow into the house or out towards the gardens. After the ceremony, drinks may move onto the terrace or across the grounds, using the wider estate to create a relaxed shift before dinner.

Dining can be arranged across different rooms depending on guest numbers and layout, while the Ballroom becomes the focal point later in the evening. Dating back to the 18th century, it brings a stronger sense of occasion to the party without separating guests from the rest of the house.

The Library, with its bar and direct access to the terrace, adds another layer to the evening, offering a quieter place for cocktails or conversation. Hotham Hall can host up to 130 guests indoors, with marquee options for up to 300 outdoors. There is no strict curfew, allowing the evening to unfold at a more natural pace.

Staying on Site

Accommodation at Hotham Hall is designed to feel like part of the estate experience rather than a separate overnight stay. The venue currently offers 17 bedrooms sleeping up to 36 guests, giving close family and the wedding party the chance to remain on site throughout the celebration.

Bridal Suite

The Bridal Suite provides a dedicated space for getting ready as well as staying overnight, keeping the morning preparations within the house.

Guest Bedrooms

Bedrooms are individually styled, reflecting the history of the building while incorporating modern comforts. The variety of rooms gives the stay a more personal, house-party feel.

Shared Spaces

The wider house includes spaces for morning coffee, pre-ceremony preparations and slower gatherings the next day, helping guests settle into the rhythm of the estate.

Further suites are planned as part of Hotham Hall’s ongoing development, expanding its suitability for larger multi-day gatherings. Additional accommodation is available nearby in the surrounding Yorkshire countryside.

Food & Atmosphere

Food at Hotham Hall is place-led, with in-house catering shaped by seasonal produce and locally sourced ingredients, including produce grown in the estate’s own kitchen garden. This gives the dining experience a direct connection to the grounds, without forcing a fixed format onto each wedding.

Menus are tailored to the couple and the style of celebration, from more formal plated dinners to relaxed service styles. Dietary requirements are accommodated as part of the menu planning process.

Drinks service moves naturally through the estate. Hotham Hall holds a full alcohol licence and has three bars across the venue, allowing each part of the day to take on a slightly different atmosphere. The terrace, Library and reception spaces can all support distinct moments, from post-ceremony drinks to late-evening cocktails.

The result is a dining experience that feels integrated into the house and gardens, rather than treated as a separate part of the day.
