Masseria Fontana di Vite is a restored 19th-century masseria wedding venue near Matera, set among olive groves, wheat fields and open Basilicata countryside. Its defining quality is its balance of rural quiet and considered hospitality: a former noble farmhouse reworked into a destination venue with courtyards, gardens, guest rooms and generous spaces for outdoor celebrations. The setting feels closely tied to southern Italy rather than a generalised version of the countryside. Guests are close to the UNESCO-listed Sassi di Matera, yet the estate itself feels private and self-contained. For couples planning a wedding in Basilicata, it offers a warm, relaxed base for a single-day celebration or a longer weekend stay.

Ceremonies

Ceremonies at Masseria Fontana di Vite are defined by texture, stillness and the architecture of the estate. Rather than one dominant ceremony setting, the venue offers a handful of atmospheric spaces that move between stone, garden and open-air countryside.

The Masseria does not have a full-time in-house wedding planner, but its hospitality and culinary team can support elements of the celebration. Additional planning help and trusted local suppliers can be arranged on request.

Historic Chapel

A small, evocative setting for symbolic ceremonies, with original stone details and soft interior light. It brings the ceremony into the older fabric of the estate.

Courtyard

An enclosed square framed by rustic arches, suited to ceremonies with a more intimate, architectural feeling. The space has a natural sense of gathering, with sound and movement held within the walls.

Poolside Garden

A more open setting for outdoor vows, especially at golden hour. Its connection to the gardens makes it feel lighter and more relaxed before moving naturally into drinks nearby.

The ceremony experience here is quiet and place-led: less formal than a castle, more intimate than a large resort, and strongly shaped by the masseria’s rural architecture.

Receptions

A wedding at Masseria Fontana di Vite feels warm, open-air and closely connected to the rhythms of the estate. The day can move from garden drinks to courtyard dining, then into music and late-night celebration without losing its sense of privacy.

Aperitivo works especially well outdoors, whether in the garden, by the pool or among the wheat fields at dusk. These first moments give guests a clear sense of the landscape: low light, local flavours and the feeling of being somewhere slightly removed from the world.

Dinner can take place in the outdoor courtyard for up to 250 guests, where long tables, candles and overhead lights suit the enclosed architecture of the Masseria. Indoors, the Main Banquet Hall seats up to 130 guests, while the Smaller Reception Room offers space for more intimate weddings or additional indoor capacity for up to 70 guests.

As the evening continues, the lack of nearby neighbours means celebrations are not limited by a strict music curfew. For multi-day weddings, the estate also supports a slower sequence of gatherings: barbecue welcome nights, romantic aperitivos, poolside brunches and olive grove picnics.

Staying on Site

Masseria Fontana di Vite offers 19 individually styled rooms and suites, sleeping up to 55 guests, with extra beds increasing capacity where required. The accommodation sits within the restored estate buildings, combining antique furnishings, traditional details and modern comforts.

Double Standard Rooms

Set within the former noble residences of the Gattini family, these rooms include French sleigh beds, high ceilings, traditional décor and private terraces with countryside views.

Large Double Rooms

Overlooking the pool and gardens, these rooms include garden access, high ceilings and either extra-large showers or bathtubs. Each can sleep up to four guests.

Junior Suites

Located on the top floor, the Junior Suites offer some of the property’s best views. They include open-plan bathtubs in the bedroom area, large bathrooms with walk-in showers and a calmer, more spacious layout.

Gattini Suite

The estate’s most exclusive suite sits within the historic Gattini family quarters. It includes two double bedrooms, a separate living area with sofa bed, a two-person jacuzzi, antique furnishings from the family collection, and both a balcony and terrace with wide views.

All rooms include modern essentials such as WiFi, air conditioning, flatscreen TVs and minibars. Guests also have access to the Masseria’s shared lounges, shaded reading areas and sunlit courtyards. Dogs are welcome in guest rooms for an additional cleaning fee.

Food & Atmosphere

Food at Masseria Fontana di Vite is place-led and hosted entirely in-house, shaped by southern Italian hospitality, seasonal produce and family traditions. Menus are created with each couple, but the experience is less about formality and more about how food moves through the landscape of the celebration.

Aperitivo might take place in the garden or wheat fields, followed by a candlelit courtyard dinner with long tables and regional dishes. The cooking draws on local colour: antipasti, handmade pastas, slow-cooked meats, Italian desserts and ingredients connected to the Masseria’s land and kitchen.

Across a wedding weekend, food becomes a way to make the stay feel fuller. Couples can add a focaccia or panzerotto party, barbecue welcome night, romantic aperitivo, poolside brunch or olive grove picnic. Each format brings a different pace, from generous and social to quieter and more atmospheric.
