True Love Never Dies: A Fire & Ice Editorial at His Majesty’s Theatre
A crimson banner reading TRUE LOVE NEVER DIES drops the full height of the dress circle at His Majesty’s Theatre, a heritage playhouse in Perth, Western Australia, wide enough to dwarf the two figures who pause beneath it for this Fire & Ice styled shoot. The theatre supplies the concept’s tension in its own materials rather than asking the styling to invent it: red velvet seating and gilt balconies carry the heat; pale satin, black lace and carved ice carry the cold.
Coutil Studio’s ivory satin carries the shoot’s paler half: a structured bodice folded into a single black velvet bow, off-the-shoulder seams, and a skirt gathered into deep, unfussy pleats rather than layered tulle. Sheer black lace gloves run the length of both arms, the one warm note against all that satin, paired with a birdcage veil pulled low over the brow instead of back over the crown. She Fine Jewellery’s pearls turn up on both models, a chain choker loose against the groom’s open jacket and drop earrings under the bride’s veil, the only detail the shoot’s fire and ice sides actually share. Hair and makeup, by Elicia Rose and Alyssa Femia, stays scraped back and severe throughout, leaving expression rather than styling to carry whatever drama a given frame needs.
The marble staircase does the heaviest lifting of the theatre’s own drama: a vintage playbill still framed on the landing, cream drapery pinned floor to ceiling either side, and two towering arrangements of red rose, blush tulip and black pampas built by Freak Haus, tall enough to compete with the architecture rather than soften it. Freak Haus’s florals repeat the ice-block logic set at the tables, dark and structural rather than romantic, anthurium and burgundy orchid standing in for the softer garden blooms a real ceremony might choose instead. Few Western Australia venues offer a staircase built for this kind of entrance.
Ice Sculptures Perth’s carved blocks stand in for candelabra at the long banquet table, tapers rising straight out of clear ice rather than metal, melting visibly across several frames as the shoot runs long. Fruit and full-blown red roses spill loose across white linen rather than sitting in arrangements, more still life than table setting, with Hire Society’s crystal glassware and gold flatware the only formal note left standing in the mess. The effect reads closer to a Renaissance banquet painting than a wedding reception: fruit gone soft at the edges, wax dripping, nothing tidied for the camera.
Pink Orchard Cakes’ tiered cake, ruffled in white fondant and skirted with ladyfingers, sits at a dessert table that takes its own theming further than anywhere else in the shoot: a cone of strawberries built the same way the florists built their arrangements, spike by spike, and a pair of porcelain swans standing guard in red satin. Maison Paper’s place card breaks the shoot’s otherwise straight-faced drama on purpose, HOPE YOUR MEAL DOESN’T SUCK XOXO hand-lettered inside a scalloped burgundy border, proof the whole concept knows exactly how far over the top it has gone. It’s the one moment the shoot winks at itself rather than staying in character, and it works precisely because everything around it does not.
Pulled back to the theatre’s full height, the two figures shrink to almost nothing against the gilt balconies and the banner’s own line, TRUE LOVE NEVER DIES, hung two storeys tall above them. From this distance the shoot’s whole premise turns literal: a couple staged inside a building built for exactly this kind of spectacle, long before either of them were born. Fire turns out to be the smaller of the shoot’s two ideas; the theatre was always going to win the argument.
