Spiral Bound: A Cretan Editorial in Shades of Olive
At Roxani Estate, a wedding venue in Crete, this styled shoot began with one table curled across the lawn in a spiral. Moss-green linen fell to the grass in loose folds; at either end, lengths of darker satin pooled like dropped coats. Behind it stood the pale farmhouse, terracotta roof and wooden shutters. Beyond the hedges, the mountains stayed grey under a late October sky.
Green did most of the work, and it was never one green. Linen in moss, satin in olive, velvet in bottle green on the round platforms that held the ceremony chairs. The cake kept to the palette in four tiers of mint, sage and deep green, piped with swags and garlands in a deliberately old-fashioned hand. White held it all in check: ruffled cushions tied onto black wrought-iron chairs, folded linen napkins, and tall wax installations, white and crumpled like cloth, that stood around the ceremony space like unfinished sculpture.

The olive bar was the most literal idea of the shoot. Vintage crochet tablecloths spilled to the grass in heavy layers, a length of olive satin running through them. On top, polished silver coupes held nothing but green olives. Olive groves cover the hills around the estate, as they do almost anywhere you might plan a wedding in Greece, and here the same fruit was served in silver. The bride stopped to taste one.

She wore a strapless satin column, sleek enough to lean across the table with a glass of red wine. Elsewhere, a fuller skirt and a cathedral-length veil edged in scalloped lace, with lace cuffs at the wrists. Her flowers hung from a curved handle like a small bag: white blooms, cream amaranthus trailing below. In black and white, she lifted the veil over her face among the draped sculptures, and for a moment the dress and the installation seemed cut from the same cloth.

The flowers chose texture over colour. Faded hydrangeas, turning from green to dusky rose, were heaped at the table’s edges and at the foot of the cake. Pale anthuriums rose from them on long stems. Yellow cymbidium orchids grew out of clumps of grass, ferns and bells of Ireland edged the platforms, and branches of orange berries gave the green somewhere to go.

As the light went, the spiral changed. Dozens of candles in glass hurricanes and tall tapers lit along the linen and in rows on the grass, and the green turned darker, almost velvet. The bride rested her head on her arm among the wine glasses and looked straight at the camera. By then the mountains had gone dark. The table had not.
